Credential Files

What is a credential file?

A credential file is established by students/alumni pursuing a career in education.  It consists of a cover sheet and letters of recommendation.

Where do I pick up materials to open or update my credential file?

Pick up materials for your credential file from the Career Services office, 131 MacKay Hall, Ames , Iowa, 50011 , or call (515) 294-6466. There is a $20 fee to establish a new file in the Human Sciences Student Services Office. There is no charge to update the letters in your file.

As a new policy, effective February 1, 2007, we will no longer be including the Data Sheet for Employment with your letters of recommendation. The Data Sheet will be replaced with a cover sheet which states, "Enclosed are letters of recommendation sent on behalf of [insert candidate name]." We would expect that your resume would include the information that was previously contained in the Data Sheet (i.e. current address, phone number, email, education and work experience).

Please note: Credential files are maintained in Career Services for 15 years from the last date of activation. To keep your file active you must provide more recent letters or contact Career Services about the status of your file.

How do I request that my credential file be mailed?

Send the following information to credreq@iastate.edu, fax to 515-294-6467, or mail to Career Services, 131 MacKay Hall, Ames , Iowa, 50011-3188. Please include the following:

  • your name (and previous names if applicable)
  • address
  • phone number
  • major and graduation date
  • complete address to which the file should be sent
  • $5 payment or credits on account must be received before credentials will be sent.

To protect your privacy, we cannot honor requests made over the phone.

How do I pay for a credential request?

Write a check to Iowa State University and send to Career Services, 131 MacKay Hall, Ames , IA, 50011, or phone (515) 294-6466 with a credit card. The fee is $5 per mailing or you may purchase 10 credits for $25. Each credit is good for one mailing of your credential file.
